Safari Activities to Do in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Gorilla Trekking
Believed to have been a refuge for species during the last Ice Age, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is now famous for its population of wild mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking is now the main activity to do in Bwindi, thanks to the almost half of mountain gorillas protected in the forest.

Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience offering visitors a chance to get up close to these endangered animals. Usually, gorilla trekking begins with a briefing early in the morning at the park headquarters, the briefing covers important topics about gorillas and Bwindi Forest at large such as how to act around the primates, what to expect, and what to pack. The actual gorilla trek can take between 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the gorilla family and its location.

Before visitors head into the forest, a team of advanced trackers is sent earlier to locate the primates. The team keeps communicating by radio with the rangers leading the
tourists with details about their location. Because of this advanced team of trackers, the chance of spotting mountain gorillas is very high.

Upon locating mountain gorillas, tourists are allowed only one hour with the gorillas. This is because these creatures are still semi-wild, and the prolonged presence of humans may annoy them, causing them to charge. In the rare cases where a gorilla charges, it is wise to never run away. Simply lie low in a submissive posture, and all will be fine.

Gorilla Habituation Experience

Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique gorilla experience only offered in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This magical experience offers a more immersive gorilla experience, allowing visitors to learn more about gorillas together with researchers and scientists.

Unlike gorilla trekking, the gorilla habituation experience lasts for 4 hours of observing gorillas and their unique traits and characteristics, which differentiate them from each other.

Hiking and Guided Nature Walks

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park protects great biodiversity, which is best experienced on hiking and guided nature walks. Several trails have been established to allow visitors to marvel at the forest and its creatures, including birds, butterflies, and primates.

There are six trails to choose from, and each of these trails takes you through a different part of the forest. During the trek, you will discover some of Bwindi’s lesser-visited but fascinating attractions and sites, including Muyanga Waterfall, Habinyanja Swamp, and the African Corner named a piece of rock that is said to depict a map of Africa.

One of the beautiful trails in the park starts from Buhoma to Nkuringo, and from Nkuringo to Kisoro. These trails go through the forest and provide opportunities to mingle with the local people.

Bird watching

The activity takes 1-3 hours, depending on your preference, leading you to the local communities, a craft center, a local brewery, and many other interesting places in the area.

Batwa Cultural Experience

The Batwa pygmies, also known as the forest people, the hunter-gatherers, are believed to be the oldest indigenous tribe in Uganda. For centuries, the Batwa lived off the forest of Bwindi until they were evicted in the 1990s when the forest was established as a protected area to protect the then critically endangered mountain gorillas.

Visiting the Batwa provides a unique opportunity to learn about their lifestyle, ancient culture, and traditions. Visitors get to the way as they showcase their cultural heritage and ancient way of life through dance and drama, storytelling, and visiting the medicine man, among others.
