How long do you want to travel for?

The Photography Safari That Plans Around Light Not Parks

The short answer: for the dramatic Mara River crossings, go between late July and October 2027, in the northern Serengeti or Kenya's Masai Mara, with August and September the classic window. For the calving season and newborn wildebeest, go January to March 2027, in the southern Serengeti around Ndutu. The migration is a year-round cycle, so the best month depends on which part of it you want to see. Here is the full month-by-month guide for 2027.

The Great Migration is the single most searched-for safari experience in the world, and the most common mistake people make when planning it is thinking of it as an event with a date. It is not. It is a continuous, year-round movement of close to two million wildebeest, several hundred thousand zebra and gazelles, and the predators that follow them, turning slowly in a vast clockwise circle through Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara.

So the real question is not "when is the migration," but "which part of the migration do you want to see," because the answer changes where and when you should go. This guide answers that for 2027, month by month.

The Two Things People Actually Travel For

Most travellers are chasing one of two spectacles, and they happen at opposite ends of the year.

The river crossings are the famous ones: thousands of wildebeest hurling themselves across the crocodile-filled Mara River, the image that defines the migration in most people's minds. These happen from late July to October, in the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara.

The calving season is the quieter but equally extraordinary alternative: hundreds of thousands of wildebeest giving birth within a few short weeks on the southern plains, with predators drawn in by the concentration of newborns. This happens from January to March, in the southern Serengeti around Ndutu.

If you know which of these you want, you already know roughly when to go. The month-by-month breakdown below fills in the detail.

The Great Migration Month by Month in 2027

This pattern holds for 2027 as it does most years, with the usual caveat that the herds follow the rains, so the timing can shift by a couple of weeks either way.

January to March: The herds are on the southern Serengeti short-grass plains around Ndutu. This is calving season, when the wildebeest give birth in huge numbers. The plains are green, the predator action is intense, and it is the best time of year for big-cat sightings. It is also a quieter, often more affordable window than the crossings, and it suits families well because the location is predictable.

April to May: The herds begin moving north and west through the central Serengeti. This coincides with the long rains, so the landscape is lush and the herds are more scattered, which makes viewing less concentrated. It is the low season, with the lowest prices of the year and the fewest other vehicles. A real trade-off: fewer crowds and lower cost, but less predictable sightings and wetter conditions.

June to July: The herds push into the western corridor and the northern Serengeti, and the first river crossings begin at the Grumeti River, usually around June and into July. June is an excellent, slightly under-the-radar time to catch early crossings before the peak-season crowds and prices arrive.

Late July to October: This is the main event. The herds reach the northern Serengeti and begin crossing the Mara River into Kenya's Masai Mara. August and September are the classic months for the big Mara River crossings, the ones most people picture. This is also the busiest and most expensive window, and the crossings are never guaranteed on any given day, so you plan for several days in the right area to maximise your chances.

November: The short rains begin, and the herds start drifting back south out of the Mara toward the Serengeti. A transitional month, quieter and greener, with the herds on the move.

December: The herds are back on the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains, grazing the fresh grass and preparing for the next calving. The cycle begins again.

So, Which Should You Choose for 2027?

For most first-time visitors who want the iconic image, plan for August or September 2027 and base yourself in the northern Serengeti or the Masai Mara. That is the highest-probability window for the Mara River crossings. Book early, because this is peak season and the best camps in the right locations fill up a year or more in advance.

Choose January to March 2027 if you want the calving season, the year’s best predator action, lower prices, fewer crowds, and a more predictable location. For photographers after dramatic hunting behaviour, and for families who want certainty about where the herds will be, this is arguably the better choice, and far fewer people know to ask for it.

Choose June 2027 if you want the crossings but want to beat the peak-season crowds and prices. The early Grumeti and northern crossings can be excellent, and the experience is less pressured.

The Honest Caveat Every Operator Should Give You

The migration follows the rains, not a calendar, so no one can promise you a crossing on a specific date. The patterns above are reliable to within a few weeks, but a dry year can pull the herds north early, and a wet one can scatter them. Anyone who guarantees you will see a river crossing on a particular afternoon is overpromising.

What a good operator actually does is stack the odds in your favour: the right region for your dates, enough days in that region to catch the action when it comes, and the flexibility to move if the herds do. That is the difference between hoping to see the migration and being positioned to.
