The Photography Safari That Plans Around Light Not Parks

This forest was here before Rwanda had a name. It will be here long after the word ancient has lost its power to impress. Here is why, indeed, Nyungwe Forest National Park belongs on every serious East Africa itinerary.

There are places that earn their superlatives quietly, without press releases or photography campaigns. Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwestern Rwanda is one of those places.

It covers 1,019 square kilometers of montane rainforest near Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It has absorbed rainfall, generated rivers, sheltered primates, and sustained an ecosystem of remarkable biological complexity. These processes began long before any East African parks were gazetted, before safaris existed, and before biodiversity terminology.

Moreover, today, visitors can glimpse that enduring vitality in the park's landscapes and wildlife. In September 2023, UNESCO formally recognized what conservation scientists had known for decades. Moreover, Nyungwe Forest National Park was inscribed as a World Heritage Site, among Africa's oldest and most biologically significant rainforests.

The inscription changed nothing about the forest. It simply confirmed, in the most authoritative language available, what the forest has always been.

GoExplore Safaris builds Nyungwe into Rwanda itineraries for guests who want to understand what Rwanda is beyond the gorillas and for guests who understand that a country capable of protecting a forest like this is a country worth spending time in.

What Nyungwe Forest Actually Is

However, the numbers are a starting point, but they do not fully capture what they are describing. Nyungwe Forest National Park holds over 1,068 plant species.  Nyungwe hosts 310 bird species, with many Albertine Rift endemics found almost nowhere else on Earth.

It also has 85 mammal species and 13 primate species, the highest primate diversity in East Africa. Over 500 chimpanzees move through its canopy. Additionally, more than 350 black-and-white colobus monkeys, endemic to the Albertine Rift, perform aerial acrobatics.

These displays make watching them from the canopy walkway one of the park's most visually extraordinary experiences.

The forest also feeds two of the world's great river systems. Nyungwe is the source of the Nile's distant headwaters. Water from this forest eventually reaches the Mediterranean after crossing Africa. Moreover, the same watershed also feeds the Congo River system to the west. Rwanda calls Nyungwe its water tower, and the description is not poetic exaggeration. It is hydrology. The park provides a significant portion of Rwanda's freshwater. It contributes to river systems that sustain hundreds of millions across the continent.

Understanding this transforms what a walk in Nyungwe feels like. Moreover, the water on the leaves and the mist on the trail are in motion. The streams that cross the path every few hundred meters are in motion. It is part of a cycle that has operated here since the forest's origins millions of years ago.

The Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees are Nyungwe's headline encounter. Additionally, they deliver an experience specific to this forest, unlike any other chimpanzee trekking destination in East Africa. The park maintains two habituated chimpanzee communities for visitor access.

The larger community, in the main forest, numbers around 60 individuals. A smaller group of about 30 chimpanzees lives in Cyamudongo Forest. It is a fragmented section of the park that offers a more intimate tracking experience.

Both communities have been habituated through years of patient research. Additionally, visitors can approach within observational distance. The chimpanzees go about their morning with complete indifference to the audience.

Chimpanzees move differently from gorillas: faster, louder, and more unpredictable. Moreover, the canopy is alive with them before you see a single one. A tracker who has followed Nyungwe Forest National Park communities for years reads the forest like a guide. The forest itself acts as the guide.

Additionally, guests on a Rwanda journey with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe receive contrasting experiences. Moreover, the gorilla encounter is composed and still, conducted in the specific silence of the high-altitude forest.

Similarly, Nyungwe's chimpanzees are the opposite: kinetic, vocal, social in an unmistakably recognizable way. Additionally, both are primate encounters of the highest order. Together, they form a complete picture of what Rwanda's forests hold.  For guests seeking engagement with the Nyungwe chimpanzee community, the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Gisovu offers a full day. Moreover, trackers and researchers observe feeding patterns, identification, and social dynamics, limited to four visitors per day.

The Canopy Walkway

Remarkably, East Africa's first tree-top canopy walkway is in Nyungwe. It remains the experience that most guests find surprising, especially those arriving for the chimpanzees. The walkway is accessed via the Igishigishigi trail from the Uwinka Visitor Center. It is a suspended bridge about 160 meters long. It sits 60 to 70 meters above the forest floor.

Additionally, the canopy spreads around you in every direction. The steel safety cables and protective netting are engineered for security. The views they frame come from the forest itself. From the walkway, the Nyungwe canopy reveals its full complexity.

The tree layers that the forest floor makes impossible to appreciate become visible simultaneously. Additionally, emergent trees rise above the main canopy. The canopy forms a continuous surface of green in every direction. The lower forest layers are visible through gaps where light reaches the ground.

Black-and-white colobus monkeys move through the middle distance. Birds that exist almost nowhere outside this forest cross the walkway's sightlines. The morning is the right time. Additionally, the mist remains still in the valleys below when the walkway opens. The forest in mist at altitude has a quality that photographs approach but do not fully capture.

What Else Nyungwe Offers

Thirteen trails wind more than 130 kilometers across Nyungwe Forest National Park. Moreover, from a one-hour walk to a full week beneath the canopy, guests can tailor their Rwanda journey. For guests who seek extended immersion in one of Africa's most extraordinary ecosystems, this offers choice and depth.

The birding is exceptional in a way that rewards both casual observers and dedicated birders. Moreover, over 310 species have been recorded. Additionally, a significant proportion are Albertine Rift endemics found only in very few places beyond this mountain range. Furthermore, the Rwenzori turaco, the Rwenzori nightjar, and the African green broadbill have restricted ranges. Consequently, Nyungwe is one of the only places on earth to reliably find them.

Additionally, the Kamiranzovu Swamp, in the heart of the park, is an Afromontane wetland ringed by the forest. It is home to Grauer's rush warbler and a botanical landscape so distinctive it feels like entering a different ecosystem.

Additionally, the trail to it passes through bamboo thickets, open clearings, and sections of forest where the canopy closes above.

The zipline, at 1,935 meters, is one of the longest in Africa. Moreover, it provides a different relationship to the canopy while moving through the trees with the wind on the face.

Why Nyungwe Matters Beyond Its Boundaries

There is a reason conservation organizations that work across the African continent prioritize Nyungwe Forest National Park. Moreover, it is a reason that extends beyond the biodiversity statistics.

Nyungwe is managed jointly by African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board under a twenty-year agreement signed in 2020. Moreover, this partnership has directed resources into ranger capacity, trail maintenance, community programs, and monitoring that informs management.

The community program surrounding Nyungwe involves cooperatives of residents whose livelihoods are built around the park's continued protection guides, porters, hospitality workers, craft producers. The logic is the same as the gorilla conservation model that has been so successful in Rwanda's north: when the people living beside the forest earn their living from the forest staying wild, the forest stays wild. Nyungwe is the proof of that logic applied to a rainforest ecosystem.

Furthermore, the forest sits at the heart of a transboundary conservation effort connected to Kibira Forest in Burundi. It extends into habitats in the Democratic Republic of Congo and forms part of an Albertine Rift ecosystem. Together, when managed as a connected whole rather than as separate jurisdictions, this represents one of Africa's greatest biodiversity opportunities.

Visiting Nyungwe is, in the most literal sense, a contribution. Moreover, it is the reason it is still here.

What a GoExplore Safaris Rwanda Journey with Nyungwe Included

The most satisfying Rwanda itinerary, designed by GoExplore Safaris, moves through the country from north to south. Moreover, it can move from south to north in a way that uses geography as a narrative.

Arriving via Kigali and moving north to Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking places the traveler in Rwanda's top wildlife experience. Moreover, the drive south through Rwanda's thousand hills tea plantations and crater lakes brings the journey to Nyungwe's edge.

At the forest's boundary, One and Only Nyungwe House sits on a working tea plantation where the trail system begins. Two nights in Nyungwe allow for the chimpanzee trek and the canopy walkway.

Additionally, one additional activity remains: the Kamiranzovu Swamp trail, a birding morning, or the zipline without rushing any of them.

Finally, three nights allow everything at the pace the forest asks for. Moreover, the journey ends at Lake Kivu for many GoExplore Safaris guests.

It is the great lake on Rwanda's western border, where fishing boats gather at dusk. The Congo hills sit across the water, and Rwanda reveals its unhurried, peaceful quality at its best.

From Nyungwe to Lake Kivu is one of the most beautiful drives in East Africa. Rwanda is a small country. In a week, GoExplore Safaris can offer guests gorillas, chimpanzees, the canopy walkway, and the lake. Moreover, the city has rebuilt itself into one of Africa's most forward-looking capitals.

Nyungwe is the part that most guests did not know was coming. Additionally, it is almost always the part they remember most completely.
