Your Journey at a glance
Welcome to Rwanda! After your arrival you will be greeted by our German speaking tour guide. Then it goes to the city tour of Kigali. Kigali is a thriving African city characterized by cleanliness, order and hospitality. It goes to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, which is a permanent memorial to those who have been victims of genocide in 1994. Here you can visit the three permanent exhibitions, the largest in 1994 documenting the genocide and paying tribute to the victims of the genocide. Then head to the Kimironko Market, one of the largest local markets in Kigali, where you will meet local greengrocers and see the juicy fruits and vegetables and try out your bargaining position in Kigali.
In the morning at 08:00 clock it goes to the Akagera National Park. Then we start your first game drive in the southern part. The game drive in Akagera gives you the opportunity to see rolling hills that alternate beautifully with lowland swamps and lakes. Akagera National Park is home to animals such as lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and more than a dozen species of antelope. In the afternoon, we will go on a 1-hour boat tour on Lake Ihema. The boat ride on Ihema Lake will reward you with a large number of hippos, giant Nile crocodiles and a variety of bird species. For the bird lovers, the majestic African ospreys and the great concentration of waterfowl are waiting. In the early evening we start the next highlight of the day – a night game drive.
Today we start after an early breakfast and you start another game drive north. Later in the afternoon you leave the park from the northern gate and drive back to Kigali.
Today, head to Nyungwe Forest National Parks, where you will visit Huye Mountain Coffee. During a tour, you will be guided through the process of planting, growing and processing coffee beans. At the end of the tour you will have the opportunity to buy freshly roasted coffee as well as craft from local craftsmen.
Today you visit the colobus monkeys. The Nyungwe Forest National Park is an ideal destination for primates to observe – there live 13 different species of monkeys. A colobus monkey can be recognized by the very black body with white whiskers, shoulders and tail. A troop of nearly 400 of these monkeys live in Nyungwe Forest National Park. This means that the chance of finding the animals after about 1 hour of tracking (or less) is very high, although of course it can never be guaranteed.
This morning we head to the Gisakura tea plantation. Here you can take a walk in the tea plantation to admire the tea area and the impressive mountain landscape. They see farmers picking the tea and collecting it in Koerben – they are paid per kilo. Then they drive to Gisenyi on Kivu Lake, near the border to Congo.
This morning you will have time to enjoy Kivu Lake with its beautiful scenery and the Virunga Volcanoes in the background. The active volcano Nyiragongo rises above the surrounding hills and offers beautiful pictures. Then drive towards Volcanoes National Park and continue to the cultural village of Ibyiwacu. The cultural village is helping the poor people, who in the past often lived only on bush meat hunting and survived tourism. In the culture village you can see the people, the culture and how they live. They also have the opportunity to see the eight traditional dances, listen to gorilla songs and see how they cook.
Today it’s time to get up early. At 5H00 we head for Volcanoes National Park, where the briefing on gorilla trekking begins at 7H00. At 08H00 it starts. They are assigned on site to 8 different gorilla families, which are visited by different trekking tours (classification on the spot according to fitness degree). The Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range and is home to the rare mountain gorilla. After you have found the gorillas, you have an hour with the remarkably peaceful gorillas. They see them in their natural habitat as they feed, play, rest and raise their young. After all groups have returned from their gorilla trekking, we return to Kigali.
Today we head to the Nyamirambo Women Center – the tour begins with a traditional snack, a short Kinyarwanda language class and an introduction to the center with opportunities. Then it’s off to the Nyamirambo district, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Kigali. Here you can see a hairdressing salon where they can get their hair done, they see two mosques and have a view of Kigali.
