Southern Tanzania

Why you should explore Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park is located in southern Tanzania and is part of the larger Selous ecosystem, one of the most important and least disturbed wildlife areas in Africa. It was formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve before being upgraded and renamed in honor of Tanzania’s first president, Julius Nyerere.

The park is the largest national park in Africa, covering over 30,000 km² of diverse ecosystems including vast miombo woodlands, open savannah, wetlands, lakes, and one of the most important river systems in East Africa the Rufiji River. This river forms a network of channels and lagoons that sustain wildlife throughout the year.

Nyerere National Park is especially famous for its boat safaris on the Rufiji River, where visitors can see hippos, crocodiles, elephants drinking at the banks, and a wide variety of water birds. This makes it different from many other African parks that focus mainly on land safaris.

The park has a rich and diverse wildlife population, including lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and one of the strongest populations of African wild dogs in Africa. Its remote nature means that it receives fewer visitors, offering a very exclusive and untouched safari experience.
