Eastern DRC
Kahuzi-Biega National Park is located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), near the western shores of Lake Kivu, close to the city of Bukavu. It lies within the Albertine Rift region and covers both lowland and montane rainforest ecosystems.
The park is best known for being one of the last strongholds of the eastern lowland gorilla (Grauer’s gorilla), the largest gorilla subspecies in the world. It is one of the most important conservation areas for this endangered primate.
Kahuzi-Biega also has rich biodiversity, including chimpanzees, forest elephants, antelopes, and many rare bird species. The park gets its name from its two extinct volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega, which shape its dramatic landscape of forests, mountains, and valleys

Gorilla trekking is an on-foot wildlife experience (with a maximum of 8 people per group), through east Africa’s rainforests to get up close with endangered mountain gorillas.
Bwindi’s gorillas in Uganda live in a high altitude rain forest, while the gorillas in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda live in a bamboo forest. These habitats result in some behavioral differences and definitely result in different hiking and viewing differences. Budget issues often impact whether our guests visit both parks and only one. If time and budget permit, we recommend that our guests view in both parks.
