The Photography Safari That Plans Around Light Not Parks

For years, a journey through Uganda's greatest primate habitats required compromises on comfort between Bwindi and Kibale. Mirima Kibale Lodge, now open, removes the last one.

There is a journey that Uganda has always been capable of offering and has never quite been able to deliver in full, not because the wildlife was not there, not because the forests were not extraordinary, but because the accommodation between them was not equal to the experience around it. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has long had its answer in Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge, perched on Nteko Ridge at 2,161 metres with the forest canopy spread below it and the Virunga volcanoes on the horizon. Kibale National Park, home to the finest chimpanzee trekking in East Africa, did not.

That changed on the 1st of June 2026, when Mirima Kibale Lodge opened its doors above Lake Nyamirima. And with it, Uganda's complete primate circuit gorillas, chimpanzees, and the extraordinary biodiversity that connects them became available within a single, seamless, luxury journey for the first time.

Mirima Kibale Lodge: What It Is and Where It Sits

Mirima Kibale Lodge is a premium luxury safari lodge above Lake Nyamirima, 20 minutes outside Kibale National Park, Uganda's most celebrated destination for chimpanzee trekking. It sits on a forested ridge overlooking a crater lake of the kind that Uganda's western corridor produces with quiet generosity, deep, still, framed by hills that turn different colours through the day as the light moves across them.

The lodge offers 8 luxury suites and 2 family villas, each positioned to look out over the crater lake and the soft hills beyond. The design is built in timber and stone by local artisans, eco-conscious, solar-powered, and rooted in the landscape rather than imposed upon it. An infinity pool sits at the edge of a view that, in the early morning when the mist is still on the water, requires a moment before it resolves into something you can fully believe.

Mirima feeds you well, in the way that matters after time on the trail. Rates are all-inclusive, with à la carte breakfast and four-course lunches and dinners at Ziwa Restaurant, with open views toward the lake, a dining room built for long conversation, a kitchen that leans on fresh seasonal ingredients and accommodates every dietary need with quiet ease. End the day at Kyanda Bar, where non-premium drinks are included in the rate and the evening belongs entirely to the view.

This is not a lodge that announces itself. It settles into its landscape with the particular confidence of something built to belong there.

The Vision Behind Mirima Kibale Lodge: The Nkuringo Eco Collection

Mirima Kibale Lodge is part of the Nkuringo Eco Collection, a locally owned, woman-led Ugandan lodge collection crafting primate-led journeys across Uganda and Rwanda. It has grown into one of Uganda's most recognised and respected hospitality names without losing sight of where it began: a deep commitment to conservation, community, and the kind of authentic Ugandan hospitality that no international hotel group can replicate.

Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge

The Nkuringo Eco Collection now spans three properties: Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge at the edge of Bwindi, Mirima Kibale Lodge above Lake Nyamirima, and Papyrus Guesthouse in Entebbe, each one designed around the same philosophy: architecture rooted in place, hospitality shaped by community, and the quiet feeling that your comfort contributes to something lasting.

Every stay within the Nkuringo Eco Collection supports local employment, skills development, and conservation initiatives that protect the very landscapes guests come to experience. This is not sustainability as a marketing position. It is sustainability as a founding principle, built into every stone wall, every solar panel, and every meal sourced from local farms.

That work has a name and an address. The Gorilla Junction Foundation, established in 2012, is the collection's community arm, and its programmes run from the Robert Brierley Community Centre, a short walk from Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge on the edge of Bwindi. Its focus is practical rather than symbolic: skills training in carpentry, tailoring, hospitality and guiding; support for Batwa communities through education and economic opportunity; small enterprise for local artisans and farmers; and greening projects around the lodges. The foundation began in 2012 as a small coffee shop that served as a meeting point for walking safari guides and travellers, and it has grown into the mechanism by which guest stays turn into lasting work on the ground. A guest at Mirima, several hundred kilometres north of Bwindi, is contributing to it just as surely as a guest at Nkuringo.

GoExplore Safaris is proud to partner with the Nkuringo Eco Collection in bringing this journey to our guests. Their values and ours are the same: Uganda, deeply known, genuinely protected, and delivered at the standard the experience deserves.

Mirima Kibale Lodge and Kibale National Park: What Awaits

Kibale National Park is the finest chimpanzee trekking destination in East Africa, and it is worth understanding why before understanding what Mirima Kibale Lodge offers access to.

The forest contains more than 1,500 chimpanzees across its 795 square kilometres, the highest density of primates anywhere on the African continent. Thirteen species of primate share this forest, including red colobus, L'Hoest's monkeys, and olive baboons. The birding is extraordinary over 370 species recorded, including the green-breasted pitta and the Kibale ground thrush, found almost nowhere else.

But it is the chimpanzee tracking that brings travellers here, and the experience Kibale delivers is different in register from gorilla trekking in a way worth preparing for. Where gorillas sit with composed authority in the undergrowth, chimpanzees move fast, loud, unpredictable, the forest canopy alive with them before you see a single one. A chimpanzee tracking morning in Kibale is one of the most viscerally exciting wildlife experiences in Uganda, and arriving back at Mirima Kibale Lodge afterwards a crater lake outside the window, a four-course lunch at Ziwa Restaurant, an afternoon that belongs entirely to stillness is the kind of contrast that makes a great day into a perfect one.

Mirima Kibale Lodge Completes Uganda's Primate Circuit

GoExplore has long designed Uganda journeys that include both Bwindi and Kibale, because both experiences are essential to understanding what Uganda offers the primate traveller. The challenge has always been the transition between them; the drive through Uganda's western corridor is beautiful, but the accommodation at the Kibale end had not historically matched the standard of Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge at the Bwindi end. Mirima Kibale Lodge removes that asymmetry entirely.

Mirima completes Nkuringo's primate circuit linking gorilla, chimpanzee, and golden monkey habitats within one conservation-driven journey. What this means for a GoExplore guest is a Uganda safari that moves from the mountain forest of Bwindi, where a gorilla family goes about its morning fifteen metres away, to the crater lake comfort of Mirima Kibale Lodge, where the chimpanzees call from Kibale's canopy and the evenings are long and unhurried, and the spa is ready when the trail is finished.

Both lodges share the same Nkuringo Eco Collection philosophy: the same commitment to sustainability, community, and authentic Ugandan hospitality. The standard does not drop between parks. It holds.

What a Complete Uganda Primate Safari Now Looks Like

It begins in Bwindi, the ancient forest, the trek, the silverback, the sixty minutes that most guests describe as the finest wildlife experience of their lives. It moves through the western corridor, hills giving way to crater lakes and tea, and arrives at Mirima in time for a late lunch and an afternoon that needs nothing from you except your presence.

The chimpanzee morning comes next, loud, alive, entirely on its own terms. Then the return: the crater lake, dinner at Ziwa, an evening that belongs to nothing but the two experiences you are still processing.

This is the Uganda safari that has always been possible in theory. Mirima Kibale Lodge makes it possible in practice.

It need not be the whole circuit; guests can stay at any of the three lodges, singly or as one journey. Either way, GoExplore Safaris designs what surrounds it: the permits, the trek days, the long drive and where to break it, the pace that suits you. Tell us your dates, and we will build the rest.
