The Photography Safari That Plans Around Light Not Parks

Gorilla Habituation gives you the chance among a few wildlife experiences and is as powerful and moving as witnessing the endangered wild mountain gorillas through habituation in the misty rainforests of East Africa. Mountain gorillas are the world’s most endangered apes, and only around 1,090 gorillas remain. The gorillas are only found in the rainforests of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They thrive in two populations, one in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the second in the Virunga Mountains Area, composed of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Virunga National Park in DR. Congo, and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

With two gorilla habitats (Mgahinga and Bwindi), Uganda is home to half the world’s total population of mountain gorillas, and a gorilla trek in these forests offers a chance to spend either one hour with a family of habituated mountain gorillas.

For travelers who wish to spend more time with these gentle giants, Uganda also offers a rare opportunity to participate in a full-day Gorilla Habituation Experience, only offered in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This experience offers 4 hours with a habituated gorilla family, accompanied by expert guides and trackers. Truly, this is one of the most remarkable wildlife encounters on the planet.

In this article, we have compiled everything you need to know about the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda.

What is Gorilla Habituation Experience?

Gorilla Habituation is a slow and gentle process through which a family of wild gorillas is introduced to the presence of humans. Wild gorillas are habituated so researchers can study the species, treat them for sickness and injuries, protect them from hunters, and boost their conservation efforts with sustainable tourism.

Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda is only done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Currently, there are two gorilla families (Bukingyi and Bushaho) open for gorilla habituation experience in Uganda.

For the gorillas to get accustomed to the presence of humans, each gorilla family has to undergo a lengthy habituation process, taking between 3 and 5 years. The process is managed by a team of expert researchers, conservationists, trackers, and rangers.

Park rangers start the habituation process by spending a short period of time with the gorillas each day, maintaining a specific distance at the limit of the gorillas’ comfort zone. Every few months, they gradually increase the time and reduce the distance until they are certain that the gorillas are ready for tourists to visit them.

While the mountain gorillas are not yet completely habituated, they are used to trackers and rangers, but not to strangers or tourists. The Gorilla Habituation Process will help to ensure that they will eventually become fully comfortable in the company of humans.

By participating in the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda, you are supporting the crucial work of habituating gorillas, their conservation, and ensuring their survival. It is truly humbling to think that you will be one of the first humans to meet these fascinating gorillas.

The experience offers a more relaxed and enriching encounter with the mountain gorillas. You will feel less rushed, and you will have plenty of time to fully absorb this incredible wildlife experience.

During your time with your gorilla family, you can immerse yourself in their world as they continue to go about their daily lives, feeding and interacting with each other, under the watchful gaze of the mighty silverback.

The Length and Delicate Process of Gorilla Habituation in Uganda

The process of habituation a gorilla group can take up to two to three years, while it can take up to seven years for other primates like chimpanzees. To achieve the desired results, researchers and their assistants spend time with the group every day, mimicking their behavior and gradually earning their trust. However, the initial weeks with mountain gorillas can be dangerous for humans, and charges are expected.

Habituation is crucial for research purposes, allowing primatologists to observe the behavioural patterns of different primates, including gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys, and baboons. This process is managed by a team of expert researchers, conservationists, trackers, and rangers. The process begins with park rangers spending some time with the gorillas each day, but at a safe distance within the gorillas’ comfort zone.

Over several months, the rangers gradually increase their time spent with the gorillas while reducing the distance between them until they are ready to receive visitors. Although the gorillas are not fully habituated to receiving visitors. Although the Mountain gorillas are not fully habituated to human presence, the Gorilla Habituation Experience helps to ensure that they will become fully comfortable in the company of humans.

This process is critical in protecting the gorillas from the dangers of poaching and habitat destruction. By carefully introducing them to human presence, we can help ensure the survival of these magnificent creatures for generations to come. It is worth noting that the habituation process began long before the idea of charging tourists a gorilla permit.

What is a Gorilla Habituation Experience?

A gorilla Habituation Experience refers to the time a visitor spends with a team of specialists as they engage in the habituation process with a troop of gorillas. More specifically, a gorilla habituation experience is a four-hour session in which just four visitors a day are allowed to tag along with the specialists as they go about the various actions involved in getting a gorilla troop habituated.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda has only been available since 2016. With only four visitors allowed per day, you can see that relatively few have ever enjoyed the honor of going on a Gorilla Habituation Experience.

What do you do during the Gorilla Habituation Experience?

The gorilla habituation experience begins with an early morning briefing. During the briefing, the ranger will explain what to expect, and some dos and don’ts when in the presence of the troop.

You will then head out with the habituation team into the forest. (Note: you head out much earlier than the gorilla trekking groups). Led by a tracker or two, you will hike into the mountains in search of a troop. Along the way, you will see how they look for the trail and the nests used by the troop during the night. This is part of the gorilla habituation process, seeing how the trackers work to find a troop.

The gorilla treks later in the day are able to head straight towards a troop because the trackers have already pinpointed the various locations of the troops.

When you find the troop, the rangers will do things like make gorilla calls and grunts. They will also chop vegetation with their machetes and talk among themselves. This is done to get the gorillas used to these noises.

The habituation team will also tell you about the troop being visited. This includes things like the names of each gorillas, and their habitats and personalities.

It is important to note that if the troop you track is early on in the habituation process, the individuals are going to be quite shy around humans. This means you may not get as close to them as you would on a regular gorilla trek; some may even stay hidden.

Also, it is important to understand that a gorilla habituation experience often introduces visitors to a troop that is shy or nervous around humans. In one sense, you are getting a more authentic experience with the gorillas. But some could be disappointed if they are expecting a really close-up encounter.

With that being said, if your troop is far along in the habituation process, then you may well have very intimate sessions with them. Managing your expectations is advised, and then if you do get a really friendly troop.

Cost of Gorilla Habituation Permit in Uganda

A gorilla habituation permit in Uganda costs $ 1,500 per person, and you will get four hours with the mountain gorillas. The price of the permit covers your park entrance, expert guides and trackers, 24-hour armed security in the park, and one hour with a semi-habituated gorilla family.

Uganda Wildlife Authority issues only Eight Gorilla Habituation Permits per day, a number that makes the experience a scarce commodity. So it is advisable to book your gorilla habituation experience permit in advance.
