FAQs About LGBTQ Travel Safety in East Africa

1. Is Africa Safe for Gay Travelers?

Africa is a very beautiful and interesting place. But, it’s not always safe for gay travellers to travel there. There are some countries that do have legislation that bans same-sex marriage, but these are few and far between. Many countries also have anti-discrimination laws that protect against any kind of discrimination due to your sexuality or gender identity however in East Africa, Uganda, Kenya & Tanzania don’t tolerant these practices but as long as you refrain from displays of affection in public spaces and remain discreet about your sexuality and gender identity, you will have nothing to worry about on your safari trip.

2. Should I Avoid Anti-LGBTQ Countries in Africa?

Many African countries rely heavily on tourism. Travellers contribute millions to these economies every time they book a trip to see the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara or Serengeti or track gorillas in the misty rainforests of Uganda. As a result, thousands of livelihoods depend on tourism. And working with people from all over the world, the majority of these individuals are open-minded and accepting of those that identify as LGBTQ (Travel) and disagree with the anti-gay laws and public outlook of their countries.

3. Can My Partner and I Show Affection in Public?

Some other African Countries are acceptive of this, but when in any other African country, especially ones with anti-LGBTQ laws, for example, Uganda, Kenya & Tanzania it’s strongly advised to avoid any public displays of affection when around locals – even if you’re heterosexual. This is because many African cultures are conservative, and deeply religious, It’s always important to remember that you chose to travel to a country and need to respect their views and customs, whether you agree or not. We understand that it’s incredibly difficult to have to do this, but it’s not only respect for other cultures, it also keeps you safe.

4. What safety precautions should LGBTQ travellers take on a safari?

It is important to be aware of local laws and customs regarding LGBTQ Travel rights in the country and regions you plan to visit. Keep a low profile, avoid public displays of affection, and be cautious about who you disclose your sexual orientation or gender identity. Consider reaching out to LGBTQ travel organizations or online communities for advice and recommendations.

What to Pack and Wear on Safari in Africa and Gorilla Trekking

Mountain gorillas live in mountainous tropical forests in Rwanda, Uganda, and DR Congo, which makes the activity of searching on foot with wildlife rangers for them a true natural challenge. If you are thinking of a gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Volcanoes National Park, or Virunga National Park, you should expect to find hot and humid weather conditions, thick forests, and steep terrain in the gorilla parks mentioned above.

For that matter, you have to come prepared with the right gear and clothing to enjoy your gorilla safari. The list of items listed here takes into account the dry season (from December to February and June to September) and the wet season April to May and October to November.

Some of the items like a scarf, and sun hat you can get in some craft markets and shops in most parts of Uganda and Rwanda.

Finally, remember to have neutral colours, quick dry and light clothes.

Hiking shoes or boots are a must-have

Tropical forests such as in Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park have very thick undergrowth, the terrain is steep and trails can be muddy and slippery in any season. It’s therefore very key to pack a pair of hiking shoes (waterproof or not) that are long enough to support your ankle and also feel comfortable wearing in case your gorilla trek gets longer. It’s nice to test the sturdiness of your shoes after buying them to avoid swelling while in the forest searching for gorillas. Alternatively, you can hire gumboots always available at the gorilla park visitor centre.

On top of hiking shoes, of course, you will need pairs of socks that are made purposely for hiking and also, an extra pair of your choice to wear after finishing the gorilla trek.

Gaiters

Gaiters are most helpful when trekking gorillas in the rainy season because tropical forest trails, especially in Uganda, will have a lot of mud due to water and thick undergrowth. So, you will want to keep your legs safe by covering and putting gaiters on top of long pants. In the dry season, you can do the trek without gaiters in Volcanoes National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Long pants and sleeves

Stinging nettles, wasps, thorny plants, mosquitoes and all biting insects you can imagine of are pretty common for instance, in Bwindi forest and Virunga. Therefore, the pants and shirts to wear for gorilla trekking must be long to cover your legs and arms too. The ones we recommend are made of light and quick-drying stuff. Though this will depend on your preference for changing clothes or washing what you wear after finishing gorilla trekking.

Though some people wear t-shirts, it’s not advisable to leave your arms exposed unless you are used to east African tropical environments. If you want to wear t-shirts, the insect repellant will help to keep insects away but it won’t stop the thorny bushes. The choice falls on your shoulders. Always keep your pants tucked into socks to keep off safari ants from entering you.

Rain jacket

This is obvious even if you want to trek in the dry season which is the best time to see gorillas because most people are made to think there’s little rainfall. It can still rain heavily in places like Bwindi forest but most likely light and humid showers. So, you have to get a rainproof raincoat that is foldable to fit into your backpack.

Day pack

You need a day pack or backpack which you will use to keep camera gear, drinking water, a lunch box and all that you need while in the forest including extra clothes.

Camera Gear

One of the awesome things to do is to take hundreds of photos of mountain gorillas. So, get ready your camera for those magical moments with gorillas for 1 hour or 4 hours during habituation experience in their natural habitat.

However The Above are the Most Essential Items to Carry while on your safari while preparing for your gorilla trekking experience with us.

Where to travel in 2023: The best destinations to visit – By CNN Travel

As We Enter the New Year 2023, the Whole World is looking forward to where to go next and planning their travels upfront as GoExplore Safaris Experts return to give guests incredible experiences. We look forward to an incredible year ahead again. But first, CNN Travel put down some remarkable places to “where to travel in 2023,” and we are up and about the feeling that the East African Region wasn’t left out.

Uganda the Pearl of Africa was Featured and Uganda has gone through some rebranding to Explore Uganda this has created some incredible insights for destination Uganda.

See below some of the remarks from CNN Travel

“Uganda – There’s considerable change brewing in Uganda’s travel offerings at the moment with the East African country looking beyond the traditional staples of safari and wildlife spotting to appeal to both regional and international visitors.

Keen to revitalize post-Covid tourism in all corners of the country, not just the big-ticket businesses offering wealthy visitors a glimpse of the Big Five beasts or mountain gorillas, it’s turned to marketing its other attributes. And why not? From the expansive shores of Lake Victoria to the snowy Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda is a beautiful wilderness playground, with opportunities for adventure including treks through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or up to the craters of the Virunga volcano chain or whitewater rafting along the Victoria Nile.

There’s also an emphasis on connecting visitors with Ugandan communities — promising tastes of Ugandan food, music and culture. Last year saw the launch of the Uganda Cycling Trail, a 1,600-kilometer mainly unpaved 22-stage route designed to appeal to all levels of cyclist from hardcore solo backpackers to fully-guided easy riders. – BN”

“Rwanda -January 2023 sees the official opening of Rwanda’s most exciting hotel yet: Sextantio Rwanda, a collection of traditionally crafted huts on an island on Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s largest lakes. It’s the first project outside Italy for Daniele Kihlgren, whose part-hotel, part-living history projects keep local tradition alive. A nonprofit delivering money straight to local communities, Sextantio will see guests fishing on the 1,000-square-mile lake, paddling in dug-out canoes, trying local banana beer and wildlife-spotting — and not just the chickens, cows, pigs and goats that roam around the property. Of course, you’ll want to see gorillas. Adjoining

Volcanoes National Park, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund opened the 4,500-square meter Ellen DeGeneres Campus in 2022. Its visitor center includes exhibits, virtual reality gorilla “encounters” and nature trails. Over in Akagera National Park, white rhinos — transferred from South Africa in 2021 to aid conservation — are already calving. It’s easier to get there, too. A new route from London joins Brussels, Dubai, Guangzhou and Mumbai as the only direct flights to Kigali from outside the African continent. – JB”

“Tanzania – From the spectacular wildlife to the beautiful national parks and beaches, Tanzania is absolutely bursting with visual splendour.

The East African country holds a seemingly endless list of incredible sights, with Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, UNESCO world heritage site Serengeti National Park, and the Zanzibar Archipelago, among its many highlights.

This year, flag carrier Air Tanzania will launch new routes to West and Central Africa, along with the UK, in a bid to transform the country’s largest airport in Dar es Salaam into a transport and logistics hub, while construction on the country’s first toll expressway is also scheduled to begin. Meanwhile, the Delta Hotels by Marriott brand is making its Africa debut with the opening of its Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay property later this year. – THG”

The Above remark by CNN travel will show you how incredibly the East African Region is busy pulling the strides to continue playing a great role in Africa Travel and big prospects for 2023.
