Chimp trekking in Budongo Forest is a moist, semi-deciduous tropical rainforest located at the top of the Albertine Rift in Murchison Falls National Park. The forest is considered the largest natural rainforest in the whole of East Africa and is famously known to be a home to the chimpanzees. Budongo Forest is en route to Murchison Falls National Park. It is also known for having the largest number of mahogany trees in Uganda.

Chimpanzee Trekking Experience in Budongo Forest - Murchison Falls 

Chimpanzee tracking as an activity involves walking through the rainforest in search of the primates. Depending on the family allocated to you, when you encounter the chimps, you are allowed to spend time with them, observing their way of living in their natural habitats, and then trek back.
Chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest is done twice a day, both early in the morning around 0700 hrs and in the afternoon around 1500 hours daily. A tourist can track on either of the shifters according to their choice. The activity takes about three to four hours generally, and within this time, trekking from the briefing area through the rainforest to the chimpanzee family, spending time with the primates in their natural home for about an hour, and trekking back.

Best Time To Track Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

Chimpanzee tracking can be done all year, however the most suitable is the dry season which is December to January and June to August which is easier since the ground is not as slippery as it can be in the rainy season.

Eligibility for Chimpanzee Tracking Experience

For all our Guests we always purchase these permits in advance from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The permit is 130 USD per person. The activity is only allowed for people who are 15 years and above. The activity strictly happens with the accompaniment of an armed ranger and guide for security purposes.
One must strictly keep with their group throughout the activity.
