A Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest National Park 2025

The best time to Explore Uganda is during the dry seasons, which are from December to February and June to August. The weather is generally warm and sunny during these months, with less rainfall and fewer mosquitoes. However, Uganda can be visited all year round, and each season has unique advantages. For example, the wet season from March to May and from September to November is a great time to see wildlife and experience lush green landscapes. Ultimately, the best time to visit Uganda depends on your interests and preferences.

January

Travel Experience – The short dry season. January is a popular month to travel to Uganda, therefore peak rates may apply. Gorilla permits must be booked well in advance.
Weather – Warmer with generally dry and sunny conditions. Some light rainfall can be expected but this is one of the driest months in Uganda.
Vegetation – Vegetation is still thick and lush after the end-of-year rains.
Game Experience – Vegetation is still green thanks to the equatorial climate game viewing opportunities are very good and conditions start to get drier. Wildlife are actively looking for water. A prime time for primate trekking due to the dry conditions.
Bird Watching – Excellent birding opportunities year-round in Uganda thanks to the diversity of the landscape. A range of migratory birds are present.
Insects – Mosquitos are prevalent in the drier north and some forests where rains are more prevalent. Mosquitos are fewer in the Bwindi forest due to the higher ground. Anti-malarial pills are recommended.
Things To Remember – Primate trekking is for ages 15+ only.

February

Bird Watching – Excellent Birding Opportunities Year Round In Uganda Thanks To The Diversity Of Landscape. A Range Of Migratory Birds Are Present.

Weather – The Beginning Of The Rainy Season Brings Heavy Downpours That Clear Quickly. Comfortable Temperatures  With Bright Spells.

Vegetation – As The Rains Become More Prevalent, Vegetation Becomes Lush And Green.

Game Experience – Start Of The Long Rainy Season But There Are Still Good Opportunities For Wildlife Viewing Without Many Other Vehicles. Trekking Can Be More Difficult As The Terrain Becomes More Wet And Muddy.

Insects – Mosquitos Are Prevalent In The Drier North And Some Forests Where Rains Are More Prevalent. Mosquitos Are Fewer In Bwindi Forest Due To The Higher Ground. Anti-malarial pills Are Recommended.

April

Boots and gators or Wellington boots are advised for gorilla trekking. Gorilla and chimp permit prices are the same year round but there are fewer people in low season. Even during the rainy season rainfall is unlikely to be constant throughout the day and skies will brighten up after a downpour.

Travel Experience – The rainy season marks the low season. Rates are low with high availability at properties, although some may close. The Murchison Falls National Park experiences a drier climate therefore worth a visit.

Weather – Temperatures are comfortable with significant rainfall levels.

Vegetation – The landscape is beautifully lush and green.

Game Experience – Wildlife can be harder to spot due to the dense bush and animals sheltering from the rain. Forest trails are slippery therefore trekking can be more difficult and take longer.

Bird Watching – Excellent birding opportunities as a range of migratory birds are present.

Insects – Mosquitos are prevalent in the forests where rains are more prevalent.

December

Travel Experience – December is high season and the rains dry out. Gets busy around the second half of the month and lodges book up quickly around Christmas and New Year.

Weather– Hot conditions with generally dry and sunny conditions. Some rainfall can be expected.

Vegetation – Vegetation is still thick and lush after the end-of-year rains.

Game Experience – Due to the dry conditions, vegetation is thinning therefore game viewing opportunities are improving. Wildlife also congregate around water holes. A prime time for primate trekking due to the dry conditions.

Bird Watching– Excellent birding opportunities as a range of migratory birds are present.

Insects – Mosquitos are prevalent in the forests where rains are more prevalent.
