In the heart of central and eastern Africa lies Rwanda, bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, and Burundi to the south. It lies a few degrees south of the equator and is landlocked. The capital Kigali is positioned near the center of Rwanda. Rwanda went through a period of suffering due to the 1994 genocide widely recognized as 100 days of slaughter whose wounds are still fresh in the hearts of the people.
However, the country has unveiled hope and resumption and has now become Africa’s kid embracing tourism, economic development and prosperity of the country. It is a land of an “a thousand hills” and known as the “Switzerland of Africa”. Much as the country is small, she is endowed with beautiful and charming attractions, which makes the country a “paradise” on earth. Rwanda is well known as a haven to the famous and exceptional critically endangered mountain gorillas. It is majorly known for her four national parks alongside other touristic features.
Akagera national park is enumerated as the largest of the national parks and it covers an area of 1,085km2 defined by an archetypal African savannah landscape, located the northeastern edge of the country. It is well known for the big five animals and a home to different bird species, chimpanzees and many other wild animals. The climate is moderately warmer within the park and the area mostly low-lying savannah, with rolling plains of broad-leafed and acacia woodlands and grasslands, which often influence game viewing.
Other national parks are, Nyungwe referred to as one of the world’s most beautiful and primeval mountain rainforests, it is well recognized to be a home for chimpanzee species, Over 300 bird species as well as 16 prevalent species and 75 diverse species of mammals. On the other side Nyungwe also offers other touristic activities such as chimp tracking, biking the beautiful terrain, canopy walking, hiking, birdwatching, relaxing waterfalls, and even community-based tourism.
Volcanoes national park lies in kinigi northern part of the country, covering 160 km2, including five of eight volcanoes that consist Virunga mountains range. It is a home of endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and 178 recorded bird species endemic to the Virunga and Rwenzori mountains. It borders mgahinga national park in Uganda and Virunga in Congo.
Mukura..giswati national park located in the western part of the country in the districts of Rubavu, Ngororero,rutsiro, and Nyabihu. Gazetted on 1st February 2016, this area is a “buffer zone” known for a wide range of flora and fauna including primates, chimpanzees, and mammals among others.
Other tourist destinations include, the Kigali memorial center genocide memorial there sits a mass concrete of graves of those who perished in the 1994 massacre.
The Congo Nile trail, one of the most impressive ways to experience Rwanda is through hiking.
This trail is a famous passage that breezes alongside the country’s most famous stretch of crystal water, Lake Kivu and bids participants dramatic scenes, thick vegetation and of course the rolling hills from which Rwanda earns its affectionate nickname.
