VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK · Mid-Range
Tchegera Tented Camp offers a small collection of eco-friendly tents set across a remote island on Lake Kivu. The camp provides a simple but atmospheric stay, with basic comforts and uninterrupted views of the lake and surrounding volcanoes. The experience is centred around location and environment rather than luxury, making it ideal for travelers looking for a quiet, off-grid setting. Its proximity to the mainland also allows for easy connection to Virunga’s main trekking activities. Tchegera Tented Camp is one of those places. Situated on the exposed ridge of a collapsed volcanic caldera rising from the northern waters of Lake Kivu, this small, forested island belongs to another world entirely accessible only by boat, surrounded by water that shifts from deep green to silver to black depending on the hour, with the glowing craters of Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamulagira visible across the lake after dark, turning the night sky a deep and extraordinary red. Tchegera Tented Camp is the island's only accommodation, run by the Virunga National Park authorities and operated with the same conservation purpose that defines everything the park does.
Six tents, four doubles and two twin rooms are arranged along the lakeshore, each with ensuite bathrooms, hot showers, and private views over the water. The furnishings are simple, and the atmosphere is unhurried. This is not a camp that competes on opulence. It competes on something rarer: a setting so singular, so quietly extraordinary, that the tent itself becomes almost irrelevant. You are on a volcanic island in the middle of one of Africa's most ancient lakes, with active volcanoes glowing on the horizon. The accommodation is the least interesting thing about being here.
Tchegera is most often paired with gorilla trekking in Virunga or a summit hike of Nyiragongo, arriving on the island to decompress, to swim in the bilharzia-free lake waters, to kayak through the morning mist, and to watch the sky change colour as the volcanoes perform their nightly light show across the water. It is one of those rare places that strips away everything unnecessary and leaves only the essentials: water, fire, forest, and sky.
Check-in flexible depending on transfers, check-out morning. Full board or basic meal plans. Access by boat transfer from the mainland. Limited connectivity. Solar power. Activities arranged through Virunga National Park.
