The Photography Safari That Plans Around Light Not Parks

Samburu National Reserve is found on the banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River in Kenya. The reserve is about 165km in size and is located 350 kilometres from Nairobi City. It is also a traditional homeland to the Samburu people, who are known to be related to the Masai. These people stay around due to the presence of the Ewaso Ngiro River, which is utilized for water by their herds for water. This river also attracts several wild animals, which come around in the dry season for water.

Samburu National Reserve is a remarkable destination with several tourist attractions as mentioned below,

The Samburu Special Five

The special five of Samburu are one of the top tourist attractions found here and these include the reticulated giraffe, the Somali ostrich, the generuk, the Beisa Oryx and the grevy zebra.

Wildlife

Besides the special five, the reserve has a variety of wildlife, including the big five such as lions, leopards, elephants, and many others. Wildlife in Samburu can be easily spotted due to the limited vegetation cover, making it suitable for game viewing.

Bird Species

Samburu National Reserve is home to a variety of bird species such as flamingos, African palm swift, golden pipit, and many others. This makes Samburu the best destination for bird watching as an activity.

Samburu Community

These are among the interesting encounters, these people are related to the Masai people and are among the few tribes in Africa that have kept a traditional way of living to date, they have beautiful bomas also known as huts and are cattle keepers. Circumcision is one of the most fascinating activities of the Samburu and also their unique cultural songs and traditional dances.

How To Get There

Samburu National Reserve is located 355 kilometres north of Nairobi the capital city of Kenya. As a tourist one can utilize either the road or air transport. By road one can take about 6 hours.

When To Go

This is a year-round destination, the best time to visit for game viewing would be June to October since most animals can be spotted around the Ewaso Ngiro River since it’s a dry season.
